Barry Zito(7-2) was on top of his game in Richmond as he tossed a beauty of a
no-hitter against the Minnesota Marvels. The Richmond Banshees won by a
score of 4 to 0.
Zito was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Minnesota batters down
like so many dominoes. He surrendered no walks and could have tossed a
perfect game if it were not for the fielding error. The Richmond players and
coaches started to leave Zito alone with his thoughts after the game reached
the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could hear a
pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after every
out. Richmond finished with 12 hits in the victory.
Kevin Millwood(0-1) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 12 hits
in 8 innings. Zito was in a jubilant mood after the game. 'If I'd known I
was going to throw a no hitter I would have gotten a haircut!' he said, much
to the delight of the clubhouse gathering.
